Rhythm Unleashed: National Troupe of Nigeria Ignites the Stage for World Dance Day 2026
The National Troupe Amphitheater, nestled within the Wole Soyinka Center for Culture and Creative Arts (National Theatre, Lagos), was transformed into a vibrant sanctuary of motion yesterday evening. In a powerful display of artistry, the National Troupe of Nigeria hosted a spectacular celebration of World Dance Day, turning the venue into a hive of creative energy and rhythmic storytelling.
Moving beyond tradition, the 2026 edition stood out for its massive collaborative spirit. The event was organized in partnership with a formidable lineup of creative pillars, including:
- The Lagos State Arts Council
- The Guild of Nigerian Dancers (GOND)
- Creative collectives such as Wao Factor, Gifted Steppers, Tribe 1, Black Edge, Funso Arts, and Jayden Expression
The atmosphere was electric, drawing a diverse crowd of dancers, cultural icons, theatre practitioners, academics, and dedicated friends of the Troupe. The evening was punctuated by inspiring goodwill messages from distinguished leaders who underscored the importance of the craft:
- Segun Adefila (National President, Guild of Nigerian Dancers - GOND)
- Tairu Ajibode (National Secretary, Guild of Nigerian Dancers - GOND)
- Isioma Williams (National President, Guild of Theatre Drummers - GOTHAD)
- Dr. Yeside Lawal (Department of Theatre Arts, Lagos State University - LASU)
In her opening address, the Artistic Director/CEO of the National Troupe of Nigeria Kaltume B. Gana fsna spoke passionately about the transformative power of dance. She highlighted its role in fostering creativity, national unity, and physical well-being while serving as a primary vehicle for promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. Looking ahead, she promised that the coming years would see even grander celebrations as the Troupe continues to elevate the art of the dance on the world stage.
