Reopening of the National Theatre, Lagos - Now the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Economy
The National Theatre in Lagos was officially reopened on October 1, 2025, marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day and a new chapter for the nation’s cultural landscape. Renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Economy, the event—officiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—honoured Nigeria’s Nobel Laureate and celebrated the rebirth of a national icon.
Through a partnership between the Federal Government and the Bankers’ Committee, the project delivered a complete modernization of the facility and reaffirmed a commitment to supporting the creative sector, including the establishment of an Artists’ Endowment Fund to empower future generations of Nigerian talent.
